Bonfire Mingle Post || OTA

Around the time the sun is starting to set in the early to mid-evening on Saturday, 11/12 as promised, Lydia will (hopefully with the help of Allison and a couple of others) have set up a bonfire on the beach. She's brought several bags of marshmallows, boxes of graham crackers, bars of chocolate, and s'more skewers so that s'mores can totally be a thing. There's also plenty of blankets and towels spread around, because she wants to be sure everyone is comfortable. Jill has offered to bring the alcohol.
Lydia can be found making her way around, greeting and mingling with anyone who arrives and throughout the night. She'll be doing her best to appear approachable so that anyone who maybe hasn't ever been to a bonfire and has questions will feel comfortable approaching her to do that.
[ ooc: please feel free to respond directly to this with your own top comments to play out stuff in here or you can use this as a prompt to make your own logs elsewhere, totally up to you. If you'd like to play with Lydia, please consider this her top comment. Mods, let me know if I need to make any changes to this.]

"Nothing. I talked to her. I like her aaaaaaand," she pauses and takes a sip of her beer to give Cam a chance to squirm a bit longer. "I told her what you said about her being hot and liking beer."
She'll reserve the part where Jill took it well until after Cam has reacted.

"Sophie! Come on," he complains, raising a hand to run over his face as it turns red. "Seriously, why do you hate me so much?" he asks, dropping his hand again. Now comes the obligatory guilt trip. "I changed your diapers, I raise you, I make sure you get to all of your after school activities, I help you with your homework...I move to New York City and this is how you repay me? Really, Soph? Really?"
Two can play at this game and she knows it.

She knows it's a guilt trip. This is how these sorts of interactions go. They've been playing their parts for a very long time. The guilt trip still works. A twinge of guilt tugs at her and despite the way she rolls her eyes, the pit of her stomach gets a little icky. "And you loved all of it, including the diaper changing."
Yup. Guilt trip still works regardless of what she says.
"Besides, maybe I helped you. At least now she knows you've got the hots for her. It might have taken you ages to tell her otherwise."

"...what did she say?" he finds himself asking. Shameful. It's shameful how much he wants to know how that whole conversation went.

"That you two were going to brew beer together," she responds. She takes a sip of her own beer. "She likes you. At least, that's the impression I got and I like her. She seems sweet."

Things are a little bit complicated with Jill. They're still sort of...feeling each other out, so to speak, but it's nice to hear that Sophie's gotten that impression, all the same. "I like her, too. So...about that guy you were talking to over there," he says, abruptly switching subjects in an effort to move the conversation away from he and Jill and, admittedly, to be a little nosy.

So they'll take things slow, keep feeling each other out. Sophie is in support of Cam being happy and if Jill can make him happy, then she's happy. That doesn't mean she won't tease him, and apparently vice versa. She rolls her eyes. "Cute guy. Funny. His name is Leo and there's no need to threaten him yet. We were just flirting and having fun."
no subject
Don't let him bring you a drink; you never know if he'll have slipped you something. Don't go home alone with him until you know him well enough. Don't believe everything you hear; not everyone is as open and honest as you. Be cautious.
The rules that Cam always lays out whenever Sophie's going to be somewhere that there will be a large number of guys who might draw her attention, especially since it would take an idiot of a blind man not to see that Sophie's a pretty girl and she draws attention naturally between that and her charisma. Cam doesn't have a problem with her seeing guys or dating, but the party scene makes him nervous. He'd been a college guy once. He knows the kind of disgusting shit that guys that age can do to get a girl where he wants her. Not that Cam talks about it, but on more than one occasion, he's had to step in and escort half-naked women to taxis because his frat brothers and teammates weren't always scrupulous. They weren't always kind. They weren't always even decent human beings. Cam doesn't want Sophie to be one of those half-passed out women who has no idea what's going on around her, being taken to some bedroom when she's too drunk to consent. Cam has seen it happen...but there isn't always a Cam kind of guy around to step in when things are about to turn.
He's overprotective, sure, but he's also depressingly realistic. Maybe Leo is a great guy. Maybe everyone here is a great person and it's not a thing he'll ever have to worry about, but the rules are set from home and he intends to keep them in place. Sophie's more than welcome to have as much fun as she'd like, so long as she's willing to promise she'll continue to be vigilant and not let her guard completely down just because they're in a place that seems so much nicer than Manhattan could ever wish to be.
"So, what's he like? What's he into? Should I start planning the wedding soon or hold off?" he teases playfully, knowing full well that a) it's going to make her roll her eyes because they are both aware that she's given no indication that she's in love with this guy she just met and b) maybe he can get a smile out of her for being overdramatic. It's not something Cam does terribly often, after all, and it's amused her in the past when it sneaks up on her.

Sophie knows the rules and she understands them. She knows that Cam has them because he loves her. She's heard about how guys can be from her friends. She's wary of guys like that, but probably not wary enough because she starts laughing, talking and having a good time. She forgets that others might have ulterior motives. She is careful at parties when it comes to drinking. Part of it is not wanting to disappoint Cam and part of it is the knowledge that sometimes guys are assholes.
She will be vigilant. She will not let her guard down. She was holding her own drink the entire time she talked to Leo.
She laughs at his rapid fire questioning. "He can hold fire in the palm of his hand without burning himself apparently. He's also an artist. Sort of. He's good with mechanical bits and metal sculpture. . You should definitely hold off on planning the wedding."

Cam looks actually impressed when Sophie goes on to answer his playful questions. "...no shit, though?" he asks, a little dumbfounded. While Cam knew that they were in a place where not everything was as simple as it looked and people were different than they were back home, hearing it directly with a connection to someone still kind of throws him for a loop. Holding fire in the palm of his hand...that's some crazy cool shit.
"I guess I'll have to put away all the wedding planning scrapbooks, then, huh?" he jokes, rolling his eyes. They both know he'd been kidding about that. Cam would be terrible at wedding planning even if he hadn't been, probably.

"Hey, if he gives you a reason, I'll cheer you on," Sophie tells him. The only time she'd really had her heart broken was in high school and she's pretty sure that's a requirement for high school. Most of the time, Sophie is more concerned with her friends, her art and her brother than she is with guys. She's not ruling anything out, but she's not looking for a relationship either. She appreciates both the protectiveness and the leash. She knows that she's loved beyond measure and she's not sure how one can't be grateful for that even when it comes with some drawbacks.
"Yeah. I'm not entirely sure if it's just a trick or something more." She sounds perplexed because she is. Street magic is certainly capable of creating the illusion that Leo did, but everything else he said points to 'not a trick' and she knows that in this place, such things are possible. "He pretended he was joking, but there was something more to it, you know? He was fun to talk to." And that's all she really cares about right now.
She snorts softly (so graceful) and rolls her eyes as well. "Oh, I wouldn't say that. After all...Jill," she teases. Yup, she's going back to that.

Rolling his eyes at the comment about Jill, Cam backtracks. "So wait, more to it like what? Like what makes you feel like that?" he wonders, because now even Cam is curious about this guy Sophie's been talking to, and in more than just the protective older brother way.
People here are different from people at home; he's always kind of known that, especially after meeting Captain America and seeing the monsters and stuff. It's equal parts terrifying and exciting and he can't help being a little more than a little interested in the "trick" this Leo guy performed for his sister, because if Sophie's right and there really is more to it...well. He'd be lying to say that wasn't intriguing, after all, wouldn't he?
no subject
Oh, don't think she doesn't see that backtracking, but she'll go ahead and answer his question. She gives a little facial shrug, holding it for a moment while she ponders that. "I don't know. Something he said, but I can't remember exactly what it was. He was also too quick to assure me it was an illusion. Weird things happen here, right?"
Maybe a guy that can manipulate fire (or create it?) isn't that out of the ordinary here. Sophie is intrigued too. She won't even try to say she isn't.
no subject
"Yeah...weird things happen here."
His eyes shift away from her as if looking for the guy he'd seen her talking to earlier and wondering if that's the same one she's talking about — it's entirely possible that he's one of many people she's talked to this evening and Cam looked over when she'd been talking to another one — and then his eyes move back to his sister. "Just be careful, okay?" Because, you never know if he's actually dangerous, goes unsaid but implied by the look on his face.
They are so out of their league in this place, aren't they...?
"Listen, I'm not gonna hog you all night, not when it's the first chance you've got to get to know new people and have fun, so... But I'll come find you when it's time to go. We're going to walk back with Jill and Lucy; I want to make sure all three of you get home in one piece," he says.

Sophie did miss the monsters and she's just beginning to get introduced to the idea of 'weird' things so she's not sure what to expect or what she ought to look for, but she's trying to be open-minded about it.
She nods a little in agreement, mind preoccupied with the idea that Leo's 'trick' with fire might not have been a trick and it feels like she just now is accepting that with Cam confirming for her that this might be real. Sophie has talked to several people tonight because she's interested in getting to know the people here and because they're fascinating. They're also largely beautiful so why wouldn't she want to talk to everyone here? "Cross my heart," she tells him. She doesn't finish the little rhyme because she doesn't like the rest of it. It's morbid. She gets that implication and she nods a little to assure him she gets it.
They are so out of their league in this place.
She smiles at him, leans way up and kisses his cheek. "You know, I'm pretty proud to have you as my brother." In other words, she knows why they're walking Jill and Lucy home and it's got nothing (or very little) to do with Cam's attraction to Jill. She waves at him and skips off before he can say much else.
no subject
She leans up and kisses his cheek and Cam wraps an arm around her in a sideways sort of half-hug. "Yeah? You guess you'll keep me, huh?" he jokes. "I'm proud to have you as my sister, too." While it's not related directly to the current conversation, the sentiment is still true.
Cam waves back at her and then watches her for a moment before turning away to go find another beer. So far, so good. This party is good and Sophie is safe and settling in and that means that, to Cam, everything is chill right now and he wouldn't have it any other way.
