[ alaina opts for a video post for this, mostly because she does a lot better in person than in writing. she's apparently like cassandra that way. whatever the case, she has something to say. settled in at a table outside, she sets the camera up, after a while of fiddling to get it just right, so that she can be seen at the perfect shot, hands folded on the table in front of her. she looks like a noble, someone born into the role of a leader, or who has been pushed there by fate and circumstance.

So, how many of us are still here? I think we need a headcount. I hope everyone is still safe, but we need to work on a lot of things now. What happened recently was a tragedy. We need to be prepared so that something like this doesn't happen again. To go with our headcount, I'd like a list of who is capable of what. If you want to give it to me in person, I'll be outside my apartment all day. [ here, have a few directions. ]

I'll start us off. My name is Alaina Trevelyan. I'm the leader of the Inquisition in Thedas and a member of the noble house Trevelyan from the Free Marches. [ this probably means nothing to anyone but whatever. ] Most of my combat experience is with two-handed weapons -- greatswords, battleaxes, and warhammers -- and I have enough here that I can teach anyone who wants lessons. I'm used to fighting mages, templars, red templars, bandits, bears, quillbacks, anything that crosses my path. I also have extensive use of survival skills. In Thedas, we don't have any of this... electricity. [ be proud, natasha. ] I'm used to pitching camps, forging weapons, and hunting for food. Everything in the world has a use and I can help with that, too.

[ paaaaause. ] I also have a habit of taking in people, so if you need a place to stay or someone to protect you, now or anytime in the future, my home is open.

I've never seen a place repair itself like this one, but the fact that it was torn down so quickly means that it could happen again. We need to be ready. That means working together to ensure that everyone survives.

I guess we're on the same page then. [ It definitely makes it better, knowing that everything isn't just killed because of what it is, that people might see reason even when things are more grey than black and white. ]

The bad guys come in all shapes and sizes, you know? So do the good guys. And the... sometimes good guys.

[ alaina has seen some weird shit in her life, especially lately, and while it might be policy to poke things before they become problems, there's also a lack of tolerance and understanding in thedas that has led to more deaths than alaina really wants to think about. so she gets what claire was going for and she's good to reassure on that front. ]

Everything comes in all kinds. The nicest and most compassionate people I've ever known have come from backgrounds that weren't widely accepted. I've known a spirit who just wanted to help ease the pain he could feel in the world. And I've known some humans more terrible than you can imagine. [ lookin' at you, mister darkspawn magister. if the legends are right, which they seem to be and definitely line up with the story he's been telling, then this guy? is responsible for the blights and everything that is wrong with thedas. ]

Right now, all I care about is keeping people safe. Whatever argument someone has going on can wait as long as no one else is threatened. Life here is becoming a lot more like Thedas than I ever wanted, so we're all going to have to work together if we want to make it through.

[ Alaina seems very logical and straight to the point. Claire likes that. She also seems open-minded and that helps Claire relax a bit. ]

So pooling our resources is a good idea. We need to be prepared for whatever might come next. I'm good with science, engineering and a crossbow, for what it's worth.

[ alaina is a punmaster and a snarky brat when she can be. but when the time comes for it, she is as straight forward as absolutely possible. she knows how these things go, knows that now is not the time for jokes, much as she might want it to be. ]

Would engineering cover things like electricity?

[ okay nix all of the above. sometimes she still jokes around. even if this is actually a serious question. ]

Judging by what can be taken away, finding our own ways to engineer things and survive is a good idea. We might have things back now, but that doesn't mean they'll stay that way.

Yeah, electrical and mechanical. I'm really good with science too. [ Now Claire feels like she's bragging. But that makes what she just said no less true. She'd started college at fourteen because she was too smart for the grades she had been in for several years.

Meeting Myrnin had only exacerbated her love of all things science and mechanical. ] I've been working on a generator, lunar powered. [ Because she'd seen those stars and moon outside the glass when the day night projection had given out. ]

Also I'm fairly certain this place has a mainframe that can be hacked into... somehow.

Good because this electricity stuff is too weird for me. [ claire can brag away as far as alaina is concerned. electricity is weird. better for someone else to deal with that than her. ]

You have? [ references that go over her head aside, she can... maybe??? get the gist of what claire means. ] Like a way to keep the city going if this happens again? That's a good idea. Having any luck with it?
